SPECIAL CLASS: Background: The Special Class at The Mico University College C.A.R.E Centre was created to satisfy the particular need of children who were assessed and were identified as being slow learners, learning disabled, and mildly intellectual deficient. Such children have learning deficits which are not easily remediate in the regular classroom setting without support services. Prior to, and after assessment and remedial intervention these children were placed in the regular school system, and some in special classes. However, it has been found that these students were at a disadvantage. Many of them have reached age twelve (12) and can no longer be accommodated at their present schools. The general school system offers no help for this group and efforts to secure placement for them in the high schools prove futile. As such, it became evident that these pupils urgently needed individualized attention in a structured system - a system that would cater to the following students: 1. Students who cannot fit into programmes of the regular schools. 2. Are not candidates for School of Hope Unit Class. 3. Children have severe learning deficits and need to receive special education services which will prepare them to be mainstreamed or to receive vocational opportunities in the future. Children needing a prescriptive programme of remediation aimed at correcting specific learning problems in two to three (3) years.
Population The population includes children between the ages of ten and fifteen who have been diagnosed as slow learners, learning disabled, or mildly intellectually deficient. Next Page ---> 1/4 |
