DIAGNOSTIC READING TEST:  

This is the outcome of one of the Centre's major research efforts.

The test was designed as a framework for assessing the reading performance of a child in Grades 1 - 6 in Primary and Preparatory Schools, and weak readers at the secondary level.

The test is appropriate for use in a clinical setting by Reading specialist or resource room teacher with a background in Special Education or teachers who receiving training in the use of the test. It is not intended for use by regular classroom teachers.

The test has been field-tested in five Caribbean territories in addition to Jamaica and is used throughout the English speaking Caribbean region.

Description of the Test: 

A diagnostic reading test that reflects the vocabulary and interests of Caribbean 
Children.

What it Seeks to Measure: 

The Mico Diagnostic Reading Test is designed as a framework for assessing performance in

· Sight Word recognition
· Oral reading and comprehension
· Listening comprehension
· Silent reading comprehension
· Strength and weakness in the use of phonic analysis can also be identified.


The Test is designed for use at Grade levels 1-6 in the primary, and with weak readers at the secondary, level. 

Who Should Administer the Test: 

As this is a test designed as a diagnostic instrument, persons administering the test should have a strong background in the teaching of reading and preferably some experience in diagnostic/ prescriptive teaching. 

The Test is appropriate for use in a clinical setting, by a reading specialist, or by a resource room teacher with background in Special Education. 

The Centre offers workshop training to teachers in administering the Test. In these workshop sessions (lasting usually half a day), participants are guided through the actual materials which must be purchased at the Centre for
$3,500.00 per kit.

 The training is held at least once every 3 months.  (Check the "News & Events" web page for upcoming workshops), also training workshops are conducted on a regular basis with Reading and Resource-room teachers of Primary and All-Age Schools

The Guidance and Counselling Department of Teachers' Colleges may request training for a number of students to be conducted at their facility.
