CARE Centre ProfileMrs. Arnold - Director
For many years, a few private voluntary organisations offered services to
children with special needs throughout Jamaica. However, there was no single
entity that catered to the needs of the school-aged child that presented with
multiple disabling conditions. Recognising that there were thousands of school
children who experienced several problems that affected their ability to benefit
from the education system, the Government of Jamaica with the support of the
Government of the Netherlands, established the Mico College Child Assessment and
Research in Education Centre (Mico C.A.R.E. Centre).
Since 1981 the Centre has offered diagnostic therapeutic services to thousands
of children in Jamaica and the Caribbean who have complex learning problems.
With the use of standardized instruments developed locally and abroad, the
Centre carries out in-depth assessments on behalf of schools, parents,
embassies, the courts and the health services, and provide placement assistance
where possible.
Although based in Kingston, the Centre extends its arms over the entire island.
Satellite St. Ann, located in St. Ann’s Bay, caters to client from St. Mary,
Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland and St. Ann. The Hostel for Children
facilitates children from other rural parish who are to be assessed at the
Centre in Kingston.
Ongoing workshops and seminars for teachers as well as island wide circulation
of our Newsletter - CARE for Special Children, encourages them improving student
achievement through the introduction of new and creative teaching strategies and
creating a culture of positive action in schools. Training of parents in
behavior management, stimulation and basic reading skills is a feature aimed at
encouraging better parenting.
Mico C.A.R.E. Centre embraces the principle of "No Child Left Behind" and seeks
to meet every child where he/she is, thus creating opportunity for each child to
achieve his full potential.
We invite you to view the services we offer and encourage you to take advantage
of these services for the benefit of your children.
